Why is a handful of nuts a day a healthy habit?

When I talk to people about a healthy diet, they usually think of foods they need to give up and stop eating.   But they should be thinking about healthy foods they can add to their day.   Dr. Oz frequently mentions adding a handful of nuts to your day.   Why?   Because nuts are good for our health.   In one class I was lecturing on how healthy nuts were.   I looked at my students and one student was snacking on a container of nuts.   He said he loved eating nuts as a snack.   And what a healthy choice for a snack.   So why are nuts so good for our health?   Is one kind of nut better than another?   Consumer Reports has a great article, The Best Nuts for Your Health in the February 2019 issue.   Healthline also has a good article on the top nuts t o eat for better health.    Add some cashews to stir fry Why are nuts a great snack food? In my nutrition classes I give students some easy ways to make their everyday diets healthier.   One way is to eat a handful of nuts everyday.   What are the health benefits of eating a handful of nuts every day?    What kind of nuts are the healthiest? According to an article in the Wellness Newsletter, (October 2013) nuts have numerous health benefits.   Nuts add fiber to your diet .    Many Americans eat diets too low in fiber.   Adding a handful of nuts is an easy way to add some fiber to your diet.   Unsaturated fats – nuts do provide fat, but heart healthy fats.   In fact, the Mayo Clinic reports in the article, Nuts and your heart:   Eating nuts for heart health , that walnuts, almonds and other nuts can help you lower your cholesterol.   They promote nuts as a great snack food and one that is easy to take with you to work or school   Not just one type of nut promotes heart health, but the Mayo Clini...
