Are you using coconut oil and thinking it is a healthy choice?   Many people I talk to and a number of students in my classes think coconut oil is healthy.   Not true.   If you are using coconut oil, there are many healthier choices.   A recent article on getpocket.com says , Stop cooking with Coconut Oil .   Why do some people think coconut oil is good for your health? The article notes that two studies in 2003 claimed coconut oil would reduce your belly fat.   Not only that but coconut oil would rev up your metabolism.   Based on these claims, some health advocates pushed coconut oil and a surprising number of people listened to them.   People started cooking with coconut oil, adding coconut oil to smoothies, and even adding some to their morning coffee.   More claims were provided as to how eating coconut oil would improve your memory , lower cholesterol, boost your immune system and even promote good digestion.      ...

What are some healthy lunches for at home or to pack?

What are some healthy lunches to eat at home or to pack for work or for going on a car trip?   When we go on car trips, we usually bring along a picnic lunch.   Just recently I went away with my two daughters and one daughter brought our picnic lunch.   Lean deli meats, whole grain rolls, fresh fruit, some greens for our sandwiches and some sides of egg salad and potato salad.   My husband and I also pack our lunch when we go on road trips.   This week we ate our picnic lunch on the way to our destination.   Sandwiches of whole grain bagels, lean deli meats, fresh fruit, whole grain chips, yogurt and milk.   So much healthier than any Fast-Food restaurant meal and often less time consuming. How to eat for a healthy heart?

In honor of American Heart Month, this week we will look at heart health and what you can eat for a healthier heart.   The Centers for Disease Control notes even small changes in your diet and lifestyle can lead to healthier changes for your heart.   Why be concerned about heart health?   CDC states, “heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women”.   Another great source of information is The American Heart Association, the go to place for questions about heart health and how to adopt a heart healthy lifestyle.   What are some of their recommendations in terms of healthier eating and exercise?   Eating for a healthy heart:   Small steps to take Eat at home at least 3 times a week.    By skipping the fast food and restaurant meals you can prepare meals that are lower in fat, especially meals lower in saturated fat, and lower in sodium.
